THE GENESIS OF THE AKROPONG PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Akropong which became mother of the Presbyterian of Ghana, did not merely act as a centre for the spread of  Christianity for her sons and daughters provided the leadership and the personnel for the work of the Church as ministers, catechists and  teachers. Akropong became the centre  for training and educating people for the work of the Mission.

The work of the Basel Mission at Akropong began on 21 March 1835 but seven years before, in 1828, the Mission had tried to estsblish a station on the Coast at Christiansborge in Accra. That establishment in 1828, was the result of an invitation a Danish Governor, John Christian Von Richelieu had extended to the Basel Mission to begin the work of evangelization on the Coast.

On 18, December, 1828, four Basel Missionaries arrived at Chrisrianborge and received a warm welcome from  Governor Richelieu.
The missionaries were,:-
.... Karl F. Salback

.....Gottllieb Holzwarth.

....  Johannes Henke (all from Germany)

and

.... Johannes  G.Schmidt (a Swiss).

Unfortunately, within eight months of their arrival, three of them died.

Henke, the fourth missionary also died on 18, December 1831, victims of unhealthy climate.
..... to be continued..
