Kwakwaduam Fekuw (UK), an organisation which coins its name from ‘Kwakwaduam’, an appellation representing the entirety of the Akropong-Akuapem tradition is by all accounts fulfilling its mission of sorting some of the several challenges confronting Akropong. The Charity set up in 1986 comprises of indigenes of Akropong resident in the UK, in any case inviting to any people who means taking part in its main goal and destinations.
“...amongst other things to encourage learning and support the education of the indigenes, what eventually developed was to focus on key areas, like how do we improve English. We then instituted the essay competition to encourage students in JSS3 before they write their BECE to get use to writing English exams at the same time motivating them to read more and offering them fantastic prices” Mr Awere Nyante, the Representative of Kwakwaduam(UK) in Ghana revealed to WhatsUp News on the sidelines of the event.
The annual competition which took place in February 2019 had the participation of about two hundred and eighty six (286) JSS3 pupils of all the schools in Akropong, wherein forty (40) out of them scored above eighty 80% after been marked by the examiners from the West African Examining Council, in order to ascertain the accepted grading standard. Two out of the successful pupils were visually impaired from the Akropong School for the Blind.
As part of the motivating factors, each of the 40 students received a parcel containing novels and a decent worth of cash prices. The first price went to Queenmillian Ntiamoah, a pupil of the Akropong Presby JHS who topped with the most astounding score near to 90%.
“Actually I was only told the same day so I wasn’t really prepared inspite of the fact that I was preparing for my BECE, so I took it like a test. The questions were easy so I tackled them”. Queenmillian disclosed to WhatsUp News.
“It isn’t surprising she topped it. She’s always been a promising student who could go the additional mile. With the Headmasters Essay Special Initiatives started in my school, we are certain of increasing the number of our top scorers from three to twenty the next time” Mr Abugri Samuel, Headmaster of Akropong Presby JHS expressed.
The initiatives of the association has so far assisted Akropong Akuapem in several areas to include; equipping the library, clinic, church building, educational sponsorships and increasingly different ventures. Also part of the sponsorship has seen large portions of its students achieve quality norms of training including some visually impaired students turned into lecturers.
As indicated by the representative of the association in Ghana, some of the challenges pointed at are the teaching methods, figured out by most examiners which he assures it being addressed.
He said the standpoint is for Kwakwaduam Fekuw (UK) to continue supporting education in several fields and not forgetting about the ethical benchmarks considering that Akropong used to be the citadel of education.
