Indigenes and residents of the reputable 'home of discipline', Akropong-Akuapem are faced with unpredictable insecurity occurrences amidst a looming chieftaincy crisis that could be waging from the choice of persons to be installed as the new Okuapehene.
The royal residence of the Queen Mother of the Okuapeman Traditional Area, Nana Afua Nketiaa Obuo II, was late last week seen burning in flames at midnight hours about 12:00 AM.
The flame was noticed in the Queen Mother's bed room by a neighbour who yelled for help. Fortunately, the fire which met the Queen Mother's absence could have claimed her life and that of the more than 25 people living in the residence.
According to residents, there was power outage long hours before, during and after the fire outbreak which could have been the closest case for the fire. They discovered at the backyard, traces of an unknown person's fingerprints on the glassed slide window of her room which was also broken, they saw two match sticks and there was the smell of petrol.
Notwithstanding, the traditional paraphernalia including every other belongings in the room, for example, her regalia, royal stools, chairs ,electrical gadgets all got destroyed by the fire.
“This could have been planned because it is one (1) year today that her car was burnt in this same Akropong over there at her residence" residents revealed to Iseegh Blogspot.com
There has been a keen level of anxiety since the passing of the longest reigning Okuapehene, Oseadeeyo Addo Danquah III, in August 2015. The king who reigned continuously for 41 years since the formation of the Akuapem State.
The tension got heightened in Okuapeman after the Queen mother, Nana Afua Nketiaa Obuo II, Nana Kwesi Omenako II the Asonahene of the Okuapeman Traditional Area and the Adum Hene, Nana Addo Payin, had followed the due process to install Atiemo Kwesi Akuffo as the new Okuapehene on 5th December 2017. The anxiety got more excessive when the Bamuhene also single-handedly tried installing another candidate as the rightful candidate.
It since been conflicting per the tradition and norms, the Queen Mother’s role to appoint an Okuapehene as tradition demands or the Bamuhene’s choice or role to also appoint an Okuapehene.
As the rotational chieftaincy title is being wrangled within the Sakyiabea Royal family, the security of the indigenes and residents of Akuapem is threatened.
The police are still investigating the cause of the fire incidence which seems far unreached.
